Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
Non-profit Organizations
GOTS is the world’s leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including social & ecological criteria.
About us
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification for the entire textile supply chain. GOTS covers the entire post-harvest processing (including spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing and manufacturing) of apparel and home textiles made with certified organic fibre (such as organic cotton and organic wool), and includes both environmental and social criteria. Key provisions include a ban on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), highly hazardous chemicals (such as azo dyes and formaldehyde), and child labour, while requiring strong social compliance management systems and strict waste-water treatment practices. GOTS was developed by leading international standard setters - Organic Trade Association (U.S.), Japan Organic Cotton Association, International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), and Soil Association (UK) to define globally-recognised requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from field to finished product. GOTS is a non-profit organisation which is self-financed. For more information please visit our website: www.global.standard.org.

On April 30th, Ruslan Alyamkin, our expert in Social Responsibility at Global Standard, joined the ISEAL Assurance Community of Practice webinar “Auditor Competence 101.” He presented key insights from the development of the GOTS Due Diligence Handbook for Auditors – a practical tool designed to strengthen auditors’ ability to assess human rights and environmental due diligence across textile supply chains. This Earth Day, we’re honoring the impact of organic agriculture for textile sustainability. We believe that every thread can help promote biodiversity and improve human health — when it’s grown and processed the right way. 🦋 Organic farming practices can support up to 50% more pollinator biodiversity compared to conventional methods.¹ 🌱 By promoting seed-saving practices and local breeding programmes, organic farming can help preserve genetic diversity and promote resiliency. ² 💧Additionally, it can protect water resources, support soil health, and increase carbon sequestration. ³ GOTS-certified goods go one step further by ensuring their organic origins are protected through every stage of processing, with strict ecological and social criteria. In football, fair play doesn’t stop at the final whistle – it continues in the fan shops. 🌱⚽️ The latest study by cum ratione gGmbH, a German non-profit organisation, highlights how football clubs are taking steps toward more sustainable and socially responsible merchandise. One of their top indicators for the proportion of sustainable garments? GOTS certification – recognised as a key benchmark in evaluating clubs' efforts toward ethical and ecological fanwear. We’re proud to see clubs like FC St. Pauli von 1910 e.V. leading the way, alongside other top-ranked teams like HSV, SV Werder Bremen GmbH & Co KG aA, VfB Stuttgart, and Borussia Dortmund. Even more clubs are proving that sustainable fanwear isn’t just possible – it’s already happening. 🏟️ With millions of loyal fans and immense cultural influence, football has the unique power to drive change beyond the stadium. Reflecting our vision and mission at Global Standard, we believe that truly sustainable fanwear can and should respect both people and planet – from production to the pitch. That’s why we support and encourage studies like this: they spark awareness, demand accountability, and celebrate those taking big steps on their journey to more sustainable processing! 📣 True team spirit means wearing your club’s colours with pride – knowing your merch was made with care for the planet and for the people behind every thread. 👉 Check out the full cum ratione gGmbH study to see how your club scored: https://lnkd.in/dKmSkydt
