SDC Lecture in PSG College, Coimbatore, India

Society of Dyers and Colourists EC, India organized an Expert Lecture in PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, India. GOTS Representative in India Mr. Sumit Gupta, who also an associate (ASDC) of SDC, UK was invited as an external expert. The lecture was held on 12th September, 2015. The audience comprised of students of B.Tech Textile Technology from the institute.

As Mr. Gupta is also an Hon. Trustee of SDC EC, he started with a small introduction of SDC and its activities in India. This was followed by technical presentation on the subject, “Compliance and Certification requirements in Organic Textiles”. Mr. Gupta informed the students about hazardous chemicals in conventional textile processing and associated health risks. He also spoke about some certifications in field of sustainable textiles like GOTS, OCS, GRS etc. as well as the traceability of products along textile supply chain. Furthermore, he encouraged students to take up research projects that are focused on environment friendly materials and processes.

GOTS at Biofach India 2015

GOTS Exhibited at Biofach India together with India Organic 2015, which was held on November 5-7 at the ADLUX International Convention Centre in Ernakulam, Kerala, India. GOTS was also the supporter of the event. GOTS remains pledged to increasing awareness about certified organic textiles and educating about the concerns regarding conventional textile processing. The show witnessed enhanced participation from organic textiles industry in terms of both exhibitors and visitors. GOTS Representative in India Mr. Sumit Gupta was available at GOTS information Booth and explained about GOTS to visitors, which included many retailers interested in adding organic textiles to their portfolios. GOTS Participated in Textile Exchange Sustainability Conference 2015

GOTS Deputy Technical Director Mr. Sumit Gupta spoke at Integrity 101 Session at TE Conference in Mumbai, India on 6th October, 2015. His presentation gave an overview about GOTS standard, key criteria across supply chain and labelling guidelines. The presentation was followed by a very interesting exercise for the participants, wherein they were asked to find out correct and incorrect label uses from 5 given examples. Other speakers in the session were Mr. Lee Tyler from Textile Exchange and Mr. Richard Cepeda from prAna. Attendees of the conference can download a copy of the presentation from the link.

GOTS was also one of the sponsors of ‘Organic Cotton Round Table’, held on 8th October, 2015. Mr. Gupta participated along with Ms. Prachi Gupta (Technical Office Manager India) and also hosted a Lunch Table Discussion during the ‘Eat and Greet’ session on the topic, “Relevance of Supply Chain Certifications at Later Stages of Production”.  There was a mix of academicians, fibre manufacturer, non-retailer brands, retail brands, natural dyes manufacturer at the table. One of the clear conclusions of the discussion was need for formation of Regional Working Groups, including brands, retailers and representatives of Standard Owner/ Certification Body. GOTS participated in Heimtextil India Exhibition and Sustainability Seminar

GOTS participated as an Exhibitor in Heimtextil India, held in New Delhi, India from 25-27 June, 2015. The GOTS information booth witnessed high level interest and a large number of trade visitors. GOTS remains pledged to increasing awareness about certified organic textiles in home textiles. GOTS Representative in India Mr. Sumit Gupta explained about GOTS to visitors, which included Indian and foreign trade visitors, comprising of suppliers, buyers and other industry professionals.Organiser’s write up on the exhibition can be read here.

GOTS was also the ‘Knowledge Partner’ for ‘Seminar on Sustainability’, held on 26th June, 2015. The seminar focused on the future of Sustainable Home textiles. It gathered representatives from across India which provided them the opportunity to share their deep knowledge and experiences about the sustainable practices being followed in home textiles sector. The highlight of the seminar was the panel discussion entitled ‘Sustainability from Fibre to Textile – Challenges and Way Forward’ moderated by Mr. Sumit Gupta, which offered a great opportunity for the audience to discuss the issues related to sustainability to further increase their understanding of the subject. GOTS invited to speak at ‘Smart Vision 2020’ by SASMIRA, Mumbai

The Synthetic and Art Silk Mills' Research Association organized a gathering of its alumni on 14th October, 2015 in Mumbai, India. The theme of the event was ‘Smart Vision 2020’. GOTS representative in India Mr. Sumit Gupta was invited as an external expert to speak on ‘Sustainability and GOTS Certification for Holistic Growth’. Mr. Gupta spoke about basic features of GOTS as a sustainability standard and how sustainability related research initiatives are vital to holistic growth of textile industry.

He emphasized that the entrepreneurs need to take a top-down approach to sustainability and the top management must adopt sustainable practices as a management approach for long term competitive gains, rather than responding to external demands for compliances and sustainable products. The lecture was much appreciated by the organisers and attendees, which comprised of both industry professionals and entrepreneurs.

GOTS Conducts Annual Workshops in ESMOD, Berlin

In July 2015 GOTS Marketing Director Ms. Claudia Kersten conducted the annual GOTS workshop for the students of the course “M.A. Sustainability in Fashion”, ESMOD University, Berlin, Germany together with GOTS Deputy Technical Director Mr. Sumit Gupta.

The topics discussed included sustainable fibres like organic cotton, organic wool, recycled polyester etc and the eco-friendly processing techniques. Ms. Kersten also spoke about enhanced focus of international brands for organic textiles and the business case for sustainability. Mr. Gupta briefly spoke about some technical aspects with respect to GOTS standard.

In the interactive set up, students asked various questions and raised their points related to sustainability, GOTS, and also learned how they can progress in own respective projects in line with the global sustainability trends.

The workshop was organized by Rolf Heimann, ESMOD University.
