GOTS is the world’s leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including social & ecological criteria.

About us

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification for the entire textile supply chain. GOTS covers the entire post-harvest processing (including spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing and manufacturing) of apparel and home textiles made with certified organic fibre (such as organic cotton and organic wool), and includes both environmental and social criteria. Key provisions include a ban on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), highly hazardous chemicals (such as azo dyes and formaldehyde), and child labour, while requiring strong social compliance management systems and strict waste-water treatment practices. GOTS was developed by leading international standard setters - Organic Trade Association (U.S.), Japan Organic Cotton Association, International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), and Soil Association (UK) to define globally-recognised requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from field to finished product. GOTS is a non-profit organisation which is self-financed. For more information please visit our website: www.global.standard.org.

  • Today, exactly 11 years after the tragic Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, the European Parliament voted in favour of the landmark Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD). This landmark legislation will require large companies to prevent and remedy human rights and environmental abuses throughout their global supply chains.   We at GOTS welcome this historic step towards a fairer and more sustainable global economy. We call on companies to seize this opportunity to create ethical and resilient supply chains, and we urge other governments to follow Europe's lead and enshrine business respect for human rights into law.   CSDDD quick facts: • It introduces binding legal obligations for companies with more than 1,000 employees and an annual global turnover of €450 million to conduct human rights and environmental due diligence throughout their operations and value chains. • It empowers regulators to hold companies accountable for failing to meet these obligations. • Victims of business abuses linked to European companies will have new opportunities to seek justice in EU courts.   While there is still work to do to ensure robust implementation, this legislation has the potential to drive systemic change and improve the lives of millions of workers and communities around the world. It sends a powerful message that maximising profits can no longer come at the expense of people and the planet.   The journey from Rana Plaza to a world where the fundamental rights of all people are protected is a long one. But with the CSDDD, we are a big step closer. • • • • #nogreenwashing #sayyestogots #2024 #field #fashion #fromfieldtofashion #organictextiles #eco #fair  #supplychainlaw #EU #legislation

Today we are #RememberingRanaPlaza On 24th April 2013, the Rana Plaza factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh collapsed, killing 1138 people. Today, we remember the workers and families affected by this preventable tragedy and demand that no one dies for fashion. 11 years on, we are reminded of why Fashion Revolution first formed and why we can’t stop collectively working to transform the fashion system over a decade later. #RanaPlazaNeverAgain #RanaPlazaRemembranceDay

  • Today is #EarthDay!   Despite its considerable economic size, the fast fashion industry remains largely unregulated. The production process involves toxic textile processing that pollutes freshwater systems, causing harm to interconnected ecosystems. GOTS mandates that wastewater from all wet-processing units is treated in an internal or external functional Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP). The criteria include pH, temperature, total organic content, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, colour removal, etc.   A substantial portion of clothing is derived from crude oil, and the act of washing these garments releases microplastics into the ocean, further contributing to environmental degradation. These microfibres permeate various aspects of the environment, including the food chain, air, soil, and even our bodies, posing significant risks to human health. But it doesn't have to be this way – GOTS is part of the change toward more environmentally and socially responsible textile processing. Say NO to Greenwashing! Say YES to GOTS! • • • • #nogreenwashing #sayyestogots #2024 #field #fashion #fromfieldtofashion #meetgots #organictextiles #eco #fair
