GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD
ECOLOGY & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Environmental criteria

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) encompasses a comprehensive set of environmental criteria that address every stage of the textile value chain. These criteria include the following key aspects:

  • Organic Fibre Production
  • Chemical Input Management
  • Environmental Management and Conservation
  • Accessories and Additional Fibre Materials

Organic Fibre Production:

GOTS requires the use of organic fibres sourced from certified organic farming, ensuring that no harmful synthetic pesticides or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are used.

Chemical Input Management:

Strict guidelines are in place to regulate the use of chemicals throughout the entire production process. GOTS prohibits the use of toxic chemicals, such as heavy metals and any substances known to be harmful to human health or to the environment. Only GOTS-approved colourants and auxiliaries are allowed to be used in GOTS-certified processing chains. This “No hazard in, no hazard out!” policy ensures that no hazardous chemicals end up in the final product or in the environment.

Environmental Management and Conservation:

GOTS encourages responsible environmental management practises in manufacturing facilities certified to its Standard. It mandates the implementation of wastewater treatment through efficient effluent treatment plants, ensuring the proper treatment of the discharge water from textile processing. As part of its certification process, GOTS mandates GOTS Certified Entities (CEs) to develop a comprehensive written environmental and chemical policy. This policy covers several key areas, including the monitoring of energy consumption, waste management, emissions release and overall efforts to minimise environmental impact.  The Standard’s focus is on reducing the overall environmental footprint of the production of GOTS Goods.

Accessories and Additional Fibre Materials:

GOTS also regulates the use of additional fibre materials and accessories in GOTS Version 7.0, section 3.2.3 to maintain the integrity of organic textiles and thereby protect the health of the environment and of the end consumer.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is an all-inclusive, comprehensive standard which which sets strict environmental, human-rights and social criteria throughout the entire value chain. Find out about all GOTS key features:
